Physicals Q & A

Why do I need a physical?

You feel fine and have plenty of responsibilities and obligations, so scheduling a physical might not be at the top of your to-do list. The Compass Mental Health & Wellness team encourages you to make time for your physical because it’s a critical opportunity to check in on your health and have preventive health screenings.

Many health issues don’t cause symptoms in their early stages. During your physical, your provider checks for warning signs of disease to diagnose and treat your condition before it interferes with your health.

You might need a physical before you begin employment with a new company or before returning to work after an injury. The team also offers school and sports physicals for your children.

What happens during a physical?

Most physicals follow the same pattern. After you check in with the friendly and helpful office staff, a clinical team member escorts you to the treatment area. They check your height, weight, blood pressure, and blood oxygenation levels.

Then, your provider comes in and reviews your medical history and asks about any changes you’ve noticed in your health. They listen to your heart and lungs, palpate your abdomen, and look into your ears, eyes, and throat.

Your provider also checks your reflexes, balance, and grip. Necessary health screenings or vaccinations will also be recommended during your physical exam.

How should I prepare for a physical?

You don’t need to do much to prepare for your physical. You should make a list of any medications, vitamins, and supplements that you take regularly.

You might need to have blood drawn or provide a urine sample during your appointment. Your provider lets you know if you need to fast before your physical.

What health screenings do I need?

Health screenings differ slightly depending upon your age and whether you have a history of chronic health conditions.

Generally, it is ideal to have your blood pressure checked at least once a year and a complete blood panel annually to screen for high cholesterol, diabetes, and other health issues.

Your provider discusses your health risks and provides customized advice on what screenings you need. If you or a family member are due for a physical, call Compass Mental Health & Wellness or make an appointment online today.
